Gandhi Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
The Freedom Park built on the site of a defunct but historically significant Central Jail is in Gandhi Nagar locality of Bangalore. The park was created by the municipal corporation of Bangalore BBMP in 2008. A competition was held for the creation of the park and the restoration of the jail. An architect couple, Soumitro and Nisha Mathew Ghosh won the competition by completing the park and its restoration. The complex was opened in 2009 to the general public. The history of the Central Jail is quite remarkable. It was built as a jail by the East India Company for freedom fighters after the first freedom struggle of 1857.
