Architecture

The Sanskrit term Attahas comes from Atta (loud) and Hasa (laughter) meaning loud laughter. The temple has a stone deity that is around fifteen feet long – which, incidentally, symbolises the lower lip of the goddess. A natural pond that has now gone into disuse sits right adjacent to the temple complex. An inscription of Terracotta (Shila Lippi) was also found in the place. It is believed that the statue of the temple was in the temple till 1915. After that, original Idol was kept in the Museum of 'Bangiya Sahitya Parishad'. This statue was made of metal. After the re-installation of the statue, the idol was robbed.

Religious Significance

According to mythology, Devi Sati gave her life by jumping into the fire of Havan organised by her father King Daksheshwara. When Lord Shiva was running around the earth carrying her body then Lord Vishnu divided the body in 51 pieces using his Sudarshan chakra. Out of those 51 pieces, from which the ‘Lower lip’ of Sati fell to this place. According to the Puranas, wherever the pieces of the sati, the clothes or the ornaments held, have fallen, wherever Shaktipeeth came into existence. They are called the most sacred shrines. These shrines are spread across the entire Indian subcontinent. During Shiva’s tandav after Mata Sati’s death when Lord Vishnu had hurled his Sudarshan Chakra at the burnt corpse, Mata Sati’s lower lip is said to have fallen in Attahas. Literally, ‘Attahas’ is a Sankskrit word which means profound laughter. The lower lip had then taken on the form of a stone and a shrine was erected around it. Shiva had appointed Vishvesh as the Bhairav guarding the temple.

History

It is an Ancient and Historical Temple, the exact the temple was constructed remains Unknown.
