Architecture
The temple is constructed in the Tantric style that most of the Shakti Peeth temples are made in. The temple incorporates images from mythology and legend that surround the goddess. Appropriate to the hilly region of the temple, the architecture of the building is molded to fit the requirements of its geography. Located on the banks of the river Baner, the temple enjoys a seat in the lap of nature, surrounded by mountain ranges, valleys, and picturesque forest scenery. In the shadow of the mighty Dhauladhar ranges, by the banks of River Baner, the Chamunda Devi temple complex has very scenic surroundings. Within the complex is a cave shrine that shelters a Shiva Lingam under a boulder. Besides a water pool, overowing with the streams waters, are statues of Lord Shiva and goddess Saraswati.
There is nothing extra-ordinary about the architecture of this temple, but the divine aura spell bounds the devotees with its spiritual appeal. In the temple, the main image is visible from the main entrance. The main shrine is adored by the images of Lord Bhairav and Lord Hanuman on its sides. Actually, these lords are considered as the guards of the Goddess.
Religious Significance
Mata Kaali killed the demons kings Shumbh and Nishumbh and their two generals Chanda and Munda who headed the large army brought to kill her. It is their killing which gave goddess Kaali a new name called Chamunda. The temple is constructed on the same spot where the goddess ended the evil.
According to a legend, around 400 hundred years ago, a priest and the King of Kangra prayed to the goddess to let them shift the temple to a more accessible location, which the goddess agreed too. The Goddess appeared in the dream of the king and told him where to relocate the temple. She also told him that he would find an idol buried at the spot, which he had to set up as the presiding deity in the new temple.
History
The temple is believed to be more than 400 years old.
