Architecture
The temple is facing in East direction. Walls of the temple with the Pattachitra style of painting based on the Krishna leelas since his birth, Ten-Avatars of Lord Vishnu etc. It is a perfect fusion of modern technology and classical form of Kalinga School of Architecture. The result is a magnificent Jagannath Temple which leaves us wonder struck. Its a beautiful amalgamation of two of Odisha’s most famous temples- Lord Jagannath temple at Puri & Sun Temple at Konark. The temple is built in the shape of a chariot with four other temples in the vicinity of the Jagannath temple. The other temples are the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Bimala Temple, The Gaja Laxmi Temple and the Hanuman Temple. The temple is built in sandstone and the interiors are decorated with traditional form of Pattachitra called Kantha Chitra.
The temple complex is surrounded by a rectangular wall (Meghanada Prachira). There are four gates on all four sides in both the walls. The main gate is called Simha Dvara or the lions gates, beacause of the two huge statues of lions in its front. The temple complex covers four exclusive blocks. The main temple is 61 feet high and is built on elevated ground of 22 rising steps making it look more impressive. There is a wheel on top of the Jagannath Temple made of an alloy of eight metals (asta-dhatu). It is called the Nila Chakra (Blue Wheel).
History
The temple was built in 13th century A.D.
