Two lovers Kedar and Gouri they loved each other and wanted to marry but their family and villagers oppose them. Then Kedar and Gouri ran away from the village and stayed at jungle (forest) by their journey Gouri felt hungry so kedar went for searching for food. On path Kedar was killed by a tiger after hearing this news gouri jumped into a pond gave her life.

Another legend holds that Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati came to this place from Varanasi, as he preferred a more silent place. Devi Gouri (Parvathi) is known as the Pitha (penance) Devi of Ekamrakshetra. When Lord Shiva was in Kashi (Varanasi), he asked Narada to search for another place as in the future he thought that Kashi may become very noisy. Narada took Lord Shiva to Swarkuta hill in the dense forest of Ekamrakanan. Lord Shiva liked it and began residing here. After much insistence from Devi Parvati he brought her too. Every year during Shital Sasthi, Lord Lingaraja (Shiva) takes his marriage procession from Lingaraj temple to Kedar Gouri and there he gets married to Devi Parvathi.

History

Kedar Temple is one of the two temples in the Kedar Gauri Temple complex. It was built by the Ganga Kings in the 12th century. Gauri Temple is the second temple in the complex and is dedicated to Gauri, consort of Lord Shiva.
