God

Shri Maladevi is the main deity of this temple, who is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti.  The sanctum sanctorum has a statue which is considered to be of a Jaina Tirthankara. Again, this idol could be a statue of Buddha because it does not have any symbol typical to the 24 Tirthankaras.

Architecture

Maladevi Temple was constructed in Indo Aryan Style of architecture. There is also a circular passage and a lofty Shikhara. The Shikhara is intricately and painstakingly carved out to form an awe-inspiring sight in itself. The shikhar of the temple partly resting on the rock face has tilted towards the valley. The sanctum is crowned with a shikhara. Jain images occupy the sanctum hall. Evidence suggests that a figure of a goddess taking up the dedicatory block on the outer door frame and other ornamental sculptures probably indicate that the temple was originally devoted to some goddess and it was subsequently seized by the Jains. The temple hall is enshrined by Jain images and other decorative sculptures. A few beautiful and intricate carvings can be seen here on the temple walls and interiors. The recessed walls of the temple’s garbh griha or the inner most sanctum appear to grow out of the rock face making one wonder at the ingenuity, artistic skills and dexterity of the Indian craftsmen in handling stone as a building material. This temple was constructed with Stone.

History

Maladevi Temple was built in 9th - 10th Century A.D.
