Interesting Facts

  • One of the huge copper vessels was also unearthed at this site. The monuments here are clustered in three groups-the Nirvana site, the central Stupa and the surrounding monasteries, Mathakuar Kot and Ramabhar Stupa.
  • Ramabhar Stupa - Which is said to be the death place of Gautama Buddha. The temple is facing in West direction.

Architecture

Lord Buddha attained his salvation here. The remains of the Parinirvana Stupa, Kushinagar when excavated by the archaeologists was covered in a 40 feet high mound of bricks which was surrounded by a dense thorny forest. The Brahmi inscriptions on the walls of the Parinirvana Stupa, Kushinagar states that the cremated remains of Lord Buddha are deposited here. Stupa is made of bricks, Budha statue Carved from Chunar sandstone.

History

The Viharas and Stupas in this place are said to be 3rd Century BC to 5th Century CE. The Great Emperor Ashoka of Mauryan Kingdom contributed a huge wealth for the development of this place. The statue was built on 5th century A.D. and excavated by Carlyle in the year 1876. Maurya king Ashoka reportedly visited Kushinagar in 260 BCE where he built several caityas, stupas to honor the Buddha's place of Nirvana. Kushinagar buddhist sites was steadily expanded during Kushan empire (c. 50-241 CE), while Kushinagar witnessed golden age during Gupta empire(c. 320-647 CE) when Parinirvana stupa was largely expanded and Parinirvana Temple was reconstructed along with huge reclining Buddha statue.
