Architecture
The temple was beautifully constructed in the Kashmiri style of architecture with the high dome, beautifully carved pillars, vast corridor, and the sanctum installed with the idol of the Sun God. A walk across the courtyard is a must for visitors to notice the brilliantly fused designs and carvings on the structure that still stand the tests of time and weather. The structure is constructed completely out of limestone, and the entire complex has been built on top of a plateau. Its Kashmiri architecture was an fascinating combination of the Gupta, Chinese, Greek, Byzantine, and Syrian style of architecture.
History
According to the Tareekh-e-Hassan (The Oldest History of Kashmir) there was a city named Babul in the Karewas of south Kashmir built by Raja Ranadatiya. In front of his royal palace he built Martandeshwari temple around 370 to 400 C.E., this temple it is believed was completed by Lalitadatiya Muktapida and was dedicated to Surya Bhagwan. Within a year the temple was the temple is now in ruins. The Martand Sun Temple was constructed between the 7th and the 8th century. Martand in Sanskrit, is another name for the Sun God in Hinduism. The temple complex was built by Lalitaditya who was the third ruler of the Karkota Dynasty. It was completely devastated in the 15th century by a Muslim invader Sikandar Butshikan.
