Architecture
Lord Muraga came to this place as a poor little boy. Lord Muruga had both his hands on the hip with a senior look there are two Elephants near the lord. As he is appearing in a royal form, he is called Adhikara Murugan with authority. The temple is facing in East direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture. The Raja gopuram of this temple has five stages. The dhwaja stambham is placed infront of the temple. The Vimana, tower above the sanctum sanctorum is of Ekadala design.
The legend Andava Kuppam is inscribed at the base of the temple carving in the Fresco. The temple legend says that Brahma was held captive by Murugan as he did not answer his question of the meaning of Pranava manthra and so he was incapacitated by Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga then took over Brahma's kamandalam, Rudhraksham and took over Brahma's duties. These are brought out in beautiful carvings in the fore court pillars. There is a koneru in this temple called as Velayudha theertham.
Religious Significance
Some poor people (Aandi) were worshipping him. A devotee on his pilgrimage stayed here and wanted to have a bath and worship the lord and asked the aandis for a river or well. They said there is none such nearby. A little boy came there, took the traveler to a place and punched the earth with Vel at a place. A spring came up and the traveler’s joy knew no bounds. Lord Muruga granted darshan to him and stayed as Lord Balasubramanya. Lord Brahma during his visit to Kailash ignored Muruga as he was a little boy. Muruga intercepted Brahma and enquired about his position and qualifications. Generally, one who questions the other would be either old in age or one holding a higher position. Here, it was vice versa. While questioning the creator, Lord Muruga had both his hands on the hip with a senior look and proved that he was more learned than the creator. Lord Muruga appears in this posture in the temple. Lord Brahma sought the pardon of Lord Muruga for taking up the creation work though he was not qualified for the job. He is before the sanctum sanctorum as an oval shaped idol without a form. Only the Kamandalam and Akshamala attributed to him are in the circle. In front of the main sannidhi is an oval stone which is Brahma. The temple is 500-1000 years old and built by the local Thevar community.
History
A Mohammeddan commander passing by heard the greatness of this lord and assured the locals that he will give a reward if successful in his mission. He donated lands to the temple. Saint Arunagiriar has sung the praise of Lord Subramanya (Muruga) of this temple in his Tirupugazh hymns. Muruga is believed to have cut the Asura Sooran into two like a carpenter (Thachan in Tamil), thus the name Thachoor. He is believed to have asked the meaning of creation to Brahma and imprisoned him here.
