Architecture

Sri Ponmeri Shiva temple is constructed in traditional Kerala architectural style. The wooden and stone carvings in this temple are very beautiful. There are paintings depicting the story of the churning of the ocean of milk from the Puranas. The sreekovil of Ponmeri Shiva Temple is squarish and the sopanam has got six direct steps. This temple consists a pond and has a Namaskara mandapam. The sanctum-sanctorum of the temple is unique and unrivalled with a grandiose shivalinga with gold plated kappu (covering).

Religious Significance

Legend has it that due to a quarrel between the Ruler and the architect, the architect left the temple incomplete and hence the temple work shall never be completed. "As incomplete as the work at Ponmeri" goes a proverb in Malayalam. Even today there are works going on to improve various aspects of the external architecture of the temple. Today, Kshetra Samrakshna Samathi plays a major role in temple renovation and development.

History

In the Eleventh Century A.D., the Kadathanad Kings commissioned this great, grand and splendid Mahadeva Temple constructed by the famed architect Perumthachan.

Threat during invasions : When the forces of Tipu Sultan started to destroy the temple, it is believed that the deity emitted a fire ball and the forces had to retreat from the temple premises.
