Architecture

Origin of the Name - Perumal usually appears with his discus and conch. The presiding deity and the procession deity of the temple are holding a bow too known as Sarngam, hence the name of the Lord Sarangapani.

The temple faces West direction and built in Chola style of architecture. The Raja gopurams of the temples of Tamilnadu are noted for their height. Srirangam tower is 236 feet tall and that of Srivilliputhur is 165 feet. A 147 feet tall 11-tiered Raja gopuram and is a grand sight from all around. There are about 5 other smaller gopurams in the temple. The 11-tiered Raja gopuram was built by the efforts of a devotee called Lakshmi Narayana Perumal. There are sculptures depicting the Bharata Natya Karanas, as enunciated in the Natya Shastram - on the first tier of the gopuram, in contrast to other temples (such as Chidambaram) where they are seen on walls. The Sarangapani Temple existed during the Pallava period. However, the current structure is attributed to the period of Vikrama Chola (1121 C.E. onwards). Later, the Cholas built the superstructure of the 11-tiered gopuram but the tower was actually completed by the Vijayanagara rulers. Before the Sri Rangam Temple gopuram (tower) was built, this temple used to hold the place for the tallest temple tower in South Asia. The immensely lofty tower 173 feet in height and 90 feet and 51 feet in length and breadth shall speak a lot about the grandeur of the gopuram and the splendour of Sri Sarangapani who abides therein. Vaideeka Vimana – tower above the sanctum sanctorum is in the form of a Ther (temple Car) with massive wheels and drawn by Horses and Elephants.

The temple is enshrined within a huge granite wall in an area of 3 acres and has 3 Prakarams. In Bharatnatyam, a South Indian dance form, 108 karanas form the basic movements. Some of these karanas are sculpted around the walls of the temple. This is one base of the mandapa there is an inscription (293) attributed to. Guru Parampara prabavam by Pinbaragiya Perumal Jiyar, Periya Tiru Mudi Adaivu by Anbillai Kandadiappan, Yatindra Pranava Prabavam by Pillai Lokacharya, commentaries on Divya Prabandam, Guru Parampara (lineage of Gurus) texts, temple records and inscriptions give a detailed account of the Azhwars and their works. Hemarishi Mandapam in the middle of the temple. In the sanctum there is a beautifully carved out 12 pillared mandapa going by the Tirumamani mandapam reminiscent of the similar mandapa at Sri Vaikuntha and hence it is axiomatic to call this kshetra a Bhuloka Vaikuntha like Sri Rangam. There is a koneru named as Hema pushkarini (Portamarai kulam).

Religious Significance

Sage Brugu came to Vaikunda to test the patience and tolerance quality of Lord Vishnu by hitting on his chest. Lord did not prevent the Sage nor grew angry against him. But simply smiled. Mother Lakshmi asked the Lord how he could allow other male to touch her also while hitting him as the chest of Lord is her home. The Sage fell at the feet of Mother Lakshmi and said that he was given the job of finding a God so soft in nature for conducting a Yagna to whom it was to be dedicated. I hit Lord for this test and meant no motives. He also begged mother that she should be born his daughter. Mother Lakshmi happily blessed the Sage. She promised the Sage to leave Lord for him and advised him to take on penance to realize his wish. The Sage performed penance in Kumbakonam and found mother on the Hema pushkarini theertha on a Lotus. He took the child and named her Komalavalli. He gave his daughter to Perumal in a grand wedding. Perumal came to wed mother holding a Bow-Sarnga, hence is praised as Lord Sarangapani. The place, thus is revered as the Avatara Sthala-birth place of Mother Komalavalli Lakshmi.

The Lord of Thirukudanthai is believed to have shown the way for clearing the doubts of Sreeman Nadhamuni relating to some part of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by directing him to meet Nammazhwar. Thus he is also called as Aaravamudhan. Vishnu appeared in answer to the penance of Sage Hema Rishi to obtain Mahalakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, as his daughter. Vishnu was pleased by the penance and he granted the boon. Mahalakshmi emerged from the Potramarai Tank amongst a thousand lotuses and was thus named Komalavalli (the one who emerged from lotus). Vishnu descended to Earth as Aravamudhan in a chariot drawn by horses and Elephants from his abode Vaikuntam. He stayed in the nearby Someswaran Temple to woo Lakshmi to marry him and the couple eventually got married. The name Sarangapani (“one who has the bow in his hand”) derives from the Sanskrit word Sarangam meaning bow of Vishnu and Pani meaning hand.

History

The temple was built in 7th century A.D. by Cholas and renovation work done in 15th century A.D. The temple is believed to be very ancient with contributions at different times from Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire and Madurai Nayaks. Saint Thirmazhisai Azhwar in his Mangalasasanam hymn asked Lord “Are you resting as your legs pain due to long walk”. The hymns sung by the 12 Azhwars 7-9th century C.E. on Lord Vishnu Perumal had been edited as Nalayira Divya Prabandam – 4000 verses. Lord Perumal appearing in Nadamuni’s dream, advised him to go to Azhwar Tirunagari (praised as Nava Thirupathi in Tuticorin district) and seek the blessings of Saint Nammazhwar to get the hymns. Sri Nadamuni came to Azhwar and gave him 4000 verses far above – four fold-his expectation, his joy knew no bounds. He compiled them. Thus, the great Vaishnava Tamil scripture with all its poetic beauty speaking the spiritual experiences of Azhwars came into being to elevate the souls generation after generation.
