Architecture
This temple is the dedicated to the famous saint Sri Thirukkachchi Nambigal and is the avathara sthalam of the saint. An ardent devotee of Devarajan (Varadaraja Perumal). The temple is facing towards West direction. The temple buit in Dravidian style of architecture. The temple has a five storeyed gopuram at its entrance to a height of about 25 meters from the ground level. There is a dhwaja stambham in temple courtyard. In garbha gudi there is a Punyakodi vimanam on sanctum.
Avatars of Sri Vishnu Paintings on walls of the temple. The South wall of the central shrine contains epigraphs of 13th, 14th and 17th centuries. The earliest inscription at Varadaraja Perumal Poonamallee is from the period of Parantaka Chozha-I dating back to 10th century C.E. in which this place is referred to as Poonthamalli of Puliyur Kottam. A 13th century C.E. inscription refers to this place as ‘Kuzhukaanipakkathu Agaram, under Mangadunadu of Jayamkonda Chozhamandalam. Another 13th century C.E. inscription mentions Cheran Ravivarman Kulasekharan defeating Sadayavarman Sundara Pandian-II and the bifurcation of areas and naming the place as Chera Pandiya Chathurvedhi Mangalam. The temple has also been served by the Vijayanagara dynasty and Nayaks. A later addition to the temple in the Vijayanagara time was the Unjal mandapa which was built by Achyutappa Nayaka. The Unjal mandapam was built by Achyuthappa Nayakar. Here Garuda pushkarini is in West direction to the temple.
Religious Significance
Thirukachi Nambi was born here in 1009 C.E. An ardent devotee of Varadaraja Perumal of Kancheepuram he used to walk all the way to Kanchipuram and present owers in the Varadaraja Perumal Temple. It is believed that Lord Varadaraja used to engage him in conversation. Once when Nambi could not walk to Kanchipuiram to oer owers, Lord Varadaraja himself came here in the morning and provided darshan to Nambi with the Sun behind him. Upon Nambi’s request Lord Vishnu appeared here at Varadaraja Perumal Poonamallee in three poses on the request of Thirukachi Nambi – Varadharaja Perumal as in Kaanchipuram, Ranganathar as in Sri Rangam and Srinivasa Perumal as in Tirupathi. Thirukachi Nambi was a contemporary of the famous Vaishnavite Saint Ramanujar. The temple has 1200 years old built by Chozha King Paranthaka Chozha.
