Architecture

The Sukreswar temple premises also have a Vishnu temple and many other complexes and halls for conducting rituals and pujas. The temple also has one of the largest Shivalingas in India. The temple is located on the Sukreswar or Itakhuli hill on the south bank of river Brahmaputra in the Panbazar locality of Guwahati city. Leading down from the temple compound is a long flight of steps to the river. Sitting on the steps of Sukreswar ghat one can enjoy the scenery of sun setting on the river, boats moving across the river. There are two halls adjacent to the Sukreswar temple where marriages and rituals like pujas, post death rituals are conducted. Even after so many years the temple still holds its beauty and has been restored in a very good manner. Adjacent to it is the Nat Mandir whose roof is made of iron sheets. The temple is very peaceful and divine and the view of the Brahmaputra River just behind it is very beautiful to see.

Religious Significance

The history of the temple is associated with Saint Sukra, who made a retreat at the Sukreswar hillock, where he regularly meditated and worshipped Lord Shiva. The place where he meditated is called Hastagiri as per the Kalika Purana, for it being in the shape of the hump of an elephant.

History

It is believed to be constructed in 1744 by Ahom King Pramatta Singha (1744–1751). King Rajeswar Singha (1751–69) who also promoted cause of the Saiva cult made financial provisions for the Sukreswar Temple in 1759.
