Religious Significance

Legend : It is believed that the deity worshipped here possesses some of the aspects of Shiva too. It was after killing the asura, Khara that Sri Rama got both the Shaiva and Vaishnava aspects. Thus Triprayar Thevar is also called Khara Samhara Moorthy. It is also believed that the portrayal of Rama with a garland held in the image's hand is also suggestive of aspects of Bhrahma and hence the deity is said to be a manifestation of the Trimoorthis.

One day while fishing in the sea, the idols were caught in the net of the fishermen. They had seen a flash of light [Divya Thejus] emanating from the idols and were astonished to see that. The chief of the fishermen and some others had gone to the nearby ancestors of the 'Vakkayil Kaimal' and informed them of the incident. Those who heard about the incident gathered in large numbers there. Kaimal and other chiefs of the locality arrived at the site of the idols. Famous thantris and astrologers were summoned. They all discussed the 'Vigraha Mahatmya',about the ideal, sacred place and location for the installation of the idols. It was decided after prasnam, that the idol of Sri Rama was to be installed at Triprayar, Sri Bharatha at Irinjalakkuda, Sri Lakshmana's idol at Moozhikkulam and idol of Sri Shathrughna at an adjacent place called Payammel.
