Urgelling Gompa, one of the initial three monasteries communities worked by Urgen Sangpo. The small monastery is considered to be one of the most important places for followers of Buddhism and is believed to be the birthplace of his Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama.

Best Season To Visit

The best season to visit the temple is Summer season. The best months to visit are May to June and September to October.

Dress Code

  • For men the dress code is Shirt & Trouser, Dhoti or Pyjamas with upper cloth.
  • For women the preferred dress code is saree or half-saree with blouse or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth.
  • Shorts, mini-skirts, middies, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short-length T-shirts are not allowed.

Do's & Dont's

  • Do bathe and wear clean clothes before you enter the temple.
  • Do respect ancient customs and co-piligrims while at temple.
  • Smoking and drinking is prohibited in this temple.
  • Chewing betel leaves, tobacco, gutka and spitting inside temple is strictly prohibited.

Architecture

Within the main hall are hand-painted portraits of all the Dalai Lamas and imprints of the forehead and feet of the sixth Dalai Lama. There is a small side hall with nine chortens.

Religious Significance

Before Monpa left for Lhasa, it's said that he stuck his walking stick into the ground just inside the monastery gate and it eventually grew into a giant oak tree.

History

The Urgelling Gompa was constructed during 1487 A.D. by Urgen Sangpo and it became holy gompa after the 6th Dalai Lama Ngawang Gyamtso who was born in 1683.
