Architecture
Yamai Devi Temple is shortened form "Ye Mai" of Marathi which means the goddess of Kolhapur. The word Yamai refers to "goddess, please come". Idols of many deities and hindu gods are carved, walking around the temple walls, there is a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The temples of the temple can be rested momentarily.Seeing the carved rotation pillars in the wall, proud of the architecture.
The town and the temple have been associated with the Pant family for many centuries. The present head of this former ruling family, Gayatridevi Pantpratinidhi, has installed a 7 kilograms (15 lb) solid gold kalash or crown on the pinnacle of the Yamai temple on the hill. Another temple of Devi Yamai is located in the town; apart from the one on the hill. The temple can either be reached using steps that start at the bottom of the hill. Direct road access is also available to the hilltop.
Religious Significance
Legend about this place is the test of lord rama taken by Maa Parvati. When Sita was abducted by demon king ravana. Then Lord Rama was in lot of pain and anguish and was searching sita everywhere along with Laxmana. Seeing this state of Rama, Parvati had a doubt that how can Rama be an incarnation of Vishnu. Lord Shiva told her that he is aware of his reality and he is just playing the character of Rama. Right now, as per character demand Rama should feel pain. So he is feeling pain otherwise from within he is totally still and is in bliss. Parvati could not accept this fact and she decided to take test of Lord Rama. So she took the form of sita and appeared in front of Lord Rama. Vishnu worship Shiva and Shiva worship Vishnu. So for Lord Rama, Parvati is his mother. Seeing Parvati, Lord Rama immediately recognized her and addressed her as mother. Parvati realized her mistake and blessed Rama.
The story of Yamai's Goddess tells us that in the ancient times, when Shankar-Parvati Saripat was playing, she heard the voice of someone mourning. When Parvati asked, Shankar said that Shriram had gone in search of Sita. Sriram is a divine man. Then why mourn? Research on what? thinking that Parvati took the form of Sita for her examination. But Lord Sriram noticed that Parvati in the form of Sita came and said 'Hey Mai', how do you get here? asked. Parvati was confined to that place and since then she has been declared as 'Yamai' in that place.
