Architecture
Agasteswara Swami Temple faces South direction. The apsidal form of the temple informs that the temple was erected on the model of a Buddhist chaityagriha. The garbhagriha consists of a garjaprishtha sikhara (apsidal plan) and enshrines a Linga set in a round panavattam. A mukhamandapa which erected in a compound faces south the epigraph of the Renati Chola queen named Elan Chola Mahadevi made a gift of a garden to the god of Agastyesvara temple, which dated to the eight century A.D. Later, the temple received gifts under the Vijayanagar rulers. This is witnessed from an inscription dated 1382 A.D. of The King Harihara Raya II and his son Devaraya I as prince administering Udayagiri rajyam.
History
