Architecture
The Shiva lingam in this temple was installed by Agasthya Muni and so it is called Agastheshwara Swamy temple. The temple facing with East direction and has a Dwaja Sthambham. Agastheswara swamy temple consists a Three - tier Gopuram.
The absence of niches on the walls, niches with griva with nandis at the corners. This temple has an inscription engraved on its wall. It is dated in the 31st year of Kulothunga Chola, but this not a foundation inscription. This inscription may be helpful at best in setting the latter limit i.e.1100-01 A.D. for its foundation. Just Opposite to temple there is a mandapam built in the middle of river. There is a tank outside the compound for the convenience of visiting pilgrims.
Religious Significance
Sage Agasthya performed penance here for Lord Shiva. As per Legends, after getting marriage Lord Srinivasa being told by sage Agasthya stayed at his ashram. He performed nitya pooja to Lord Shiva in this place, which is nothing but present day “Mukkoti Agastheshwara swamy temple”. Sage Agasthya performed penance here for Lord Shiva and caused the origin of River ”Swarnamukhi ” from this place.
History
This temple was construction during the time of Rajendra-I. Rajaraja-III was contriubuted for this temple.
