Architecture
Kurudumale was formerly known as “Koodi-Malai” which in Tamil means “meeting hill”. Therefore it is said that the Gods would come down from heaven to this spot, for a bit of fun and games or recreation. Kurudumale Ganesha Temple is facing in East direction, Stone carvings etched on the temple pillars depicting the stories of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. The Garbha Griha is a huge one and the swamy is in the middle on a pedestal of 3 feet. There is a large Mukhamantapa in front of sanctum, where a massive monolith mooshika idol sits facing Ganesha. There are inscriptions on the temple walls that temple was built during the rule of the Vijaynagara Kings.The inscriptions are all in Tamil and some even date back to the 13th century during the rule of the Hoysala Kings. The main deity of this temple is made of Saligrama (Black stone).
Religious Significance
In Brahmanda Purana explains the Sthala Purana(History of the Place) of the temple. It records the history of the place in all the Three Previous Yugas. In Kritha Yuga, Devathas(Demigods) came here and worshipped Lord Ganesha to grace them the boon to get rid of Tripurasura. In Treta Yuga, Lord Sri Rama visited this place and prayed for the power to demolish Ravana. In Dwapara Yuga,Lord Sri Krishna came here to escape from Humiliation and disparagement in the case of Shamanthaka Mani(Diamond) when he was accused of stealing it. The idol of Ganesha in the temple is believed to have been installed by the trimurthis. Brahma - The God of creation, Vishnu - The God of preservation and Maheshwara - The God of destruction. During the Satya Yuga, which is the first mythological era, Ganesha destroyed the demon. Tripurasura and this was the reason the Gods installed the idol in Kurudumale. They also conducted a Pooja and offered prayers to the deity. Half of the temple has different style of carving, believed to have been done by artist Jakanachari and the other half is believed to have been carved by his son Dankanachari. Lord Rama offered prayers at this spot to the idol, during his search for Sita. The Pandavas also offered prayers here before the final battle of the Mahabharata.
History
Gods would come down from heaven to this spot for a bit of fun and games or recreation. While wandering in the forests Panadavas visited this temple and Worshipped Lord Vinayaka. This temple is built in 13th Century by King Krishnadevaraya, Cholas and Vijaynagara Kings are contributed.
