Architecture
Shyamrai Temple boasts a unique architectural design which includes a curved ceiling which is inspired by Islamic architecture. On the walls of the temple, the terracotta work is beautifully etched that takes the splendid grandeur of the Shyamrai temple to another level. These terracotta sculptures portray various scenes of the Epic Ramayana and Mahabharata along with Krishna Leela. Besides, the other terracotta sculptures at Shyamrai temple includes musicians, dancers and hunting sights. Made of bricks, with square-shaped towers at the corners, It is built in the panchratna architectural style (in which five pillars stand on the roof) and is probably the state's oldest temple reflecting this design. One can also catch a few glimpses of the Gandhar style (Buddhist art) on the walls. The artists have displayed remarkable skill and craftsmanship in intricately engraving designs on the baked bricks to make the temple. The four sides of the temple are followed by arched gateways leading to the sanctum. The temple has figurines and floral motifs, which were the first of its kind in the state.
History
This temple was built in 1643 by Mallaraja Raghunath Singha king of Malla dynasty and Malla Rajas are the contributors.
