Architecture
Mahadev temple is an West facing temple, this temple has two small gopurams in West and North sides. There is a Copper flag mast infront of Balikkal pura at West, temple was constructed in Kerala Style of architecture. The main sanctum sanctorium is in rectangular shape and the shrine is decorated with beautiful stone and wood carvings. This temple has a Namaskaramandapam, idol madeup of stone and temple has some wood carvings.
Inscriptions : An inscription at the temple tells about some compensation paid by Rama Varma Kulasekhara, one of the Kerala Kings in lieu of money that he had taken from the temple funds in the year 1102 A.D. Another inscription of 1338 A.D. mentions that one Manthappally Chathan Nayanar had contributed some wealth to the temple. Herman Gundert opened that the Kolla Varsham(Malayalam Era) starts on the date on which the consecration of idol in this temple.
Religious Significance
Local people believes that Lord Rama worshipped Mahadeva at this place and hence the name Rameswaram. Ramankulangara a place near to Rameswaram also indicates the association of Lord Rama with this temple.
History
Mahadev Temple was built in 852 A.D by Venad king Ramavarma Kulashekhara. Navakodi Narayanan Chettiyar a merchant who came from Tamil Nadu constructed five Shiva Temples in Kollam. They are Anandavalleeswaram, Manaleeswaram, Rameswaram, Chittadeeswaram and Trikkapaleeswaram.
