Goddess

The main diety of this temple is Goddess Bhagwati, who is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. It is a black stone sculpture about 1.6 m in height. She is in an intensely pleasant mood. On either side of the main deity, there are two smaller female deities which are worshipped by the people as Ekjata and Nil Saraswati.

  • The Tara Temple, famous for the Tanrik cult of worshipping, draws ewvotees from different parts of the country and Nepal. A ten-day festival here during the Shardiya Navratra draws an estimated ten lakh devots.

  • Shorts, mini-skirts, middies, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short-length T-shirts are not allowed.

  • Do respect ancient customs and co-piligrims while at temple.
  • Smoking and drinking is prohibited in this temple.

Architecture

It is an Ancient and Historical Temple, there is a koneru infront of the temple named as Pokhar. The village is a pre-eminently Buddhist site which, historians say, was known as Aapan Nigam during the Buddha period. A rare image of Lord Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana is also available in the temple.

Religious Significance

Going further back in the past, we find that Muni Vasistha installed the idol of Maa Ugratara at Mahishmati (present Mahishi), situated on the banks of Dhemuda (Dharmamula) river after the Mahasiddhi of Ugratara Vidya in the Himalayan Terai Tibet. Legends also state that parrots and other birds also used to talk about scripture due to constant debate.

History

Rani Padmavati, daughter-in-law of Darbhanga Maharaj, is said to have been in the 16th century.
