Chamunda killed the buffalo demon. Sri Chamundeshwari temple is facing in East direction, built in Dravidian and Vesara style of architecture. The Chamundeshwari Temple is also important due to the small footprints of the goddess that is found within it, along with a flagstaff. The interiors of the sanctum are spectacular with numerous intricate carvings. On the top of sanctum sanctorum, there is a small tower called ‘vimana’. Devi Kere or Devi Pushkarini is the koneru of this temple. Inscription at the entrance of the temple detailing its history. The idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is of gold and weighs 15 kgs. The entrance gates are made of silver and Nandi built by black granite stone (Granite quarry mysore).

Gopuram Details : Temple has an impressive seven-tier tower called as ‘gopuram’ an equally imposing entrance which is known as ‘dwara’. These two can be seen even from the distance of many miles. It is believed that when Krishnaraja Wodeyar-III was blessed by the Goddess Chamunda, he decided to build the beautiful Gopura in 1827 A.D. On the top of the tower placed at the entrance, there are seven golden Kalashas. The tower at the entrance also has a small image of Lord Ganesha on the doorway. The doorway is silver-plated and has the images of the Goddess in different forms. Its silver gates still presents a glimpse into the royal past.

Mandapams & Pillars : The temple is comprises of Sanctum Sanctorum, Navaranga Hall, Antharala Mantapa and Prakara. In the ‘Antharala’ prior to the sacred sanctum sanctorum are the images of Lord Ganesha on the left side and of ‘Bhyrava’ on the right side. To the left of Ganesha, there is a beautiful 6-foot statue of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. He is standing with his hands folded in his religious costumes. On either side of him are his three wives, Rama vilasa, Lakshmi vilasa and Krishna vilasa.

Temple Walls : There is an image of 'Anjaneya', attached to the wall. Monotony of the brilliant yellow walls are tiny alcove shrines inset with miniaturized sculptures pertaining to numerous mythological aspects and incarnations of the Goddess, each bearing in her numerous arms numerous destructive weapons (mace, swords, battleaxes, tridents, lightening thunder and so on) and astride a beast (an elephant, a bull, a mythical Makara etc) each an exemplar not only of unparalleled sculptural art, but also of tremendously excellent ancient mythological fables.

Religious Significance

Shakti Peethas refer to the sites on which the body pieces of Goddess Sati fell when Lord Shiva was carrying her and wandering through different places in deep morose. It is believed that the hair of Goddess Sati fell at the site where the Chamundeshwari Temple has been constructed. Mysore was ruled by the demon-king Mahishasura. Hence, came the name of this place – Mahishuru, the city of demon Mahisha. Acknowledging to the prayers of Gods and Goddess to save them from the monster, Goddess Parvathi, Consort of Lord Shiva, reincarnated as Chamundeshwari and killed the monster. After killing the demon, the Goddess resided atop the Chamundi Hills where she is worshiped with reverence and devotion.

Puranas Reference : In ‘Skanda Purana’ and other ancient texts, it is mention a sacred place called ‘Trimuta Kshetra’ surrounded by eight hills, lying along side of west is the Chamundi Hills, it is one among the eight hills. In the earlier days, the hill was identified as ‘Mahabaladri’ in honour of God Shiva who resides in the ‘Mahabaleswara Temple’; this is the oldest temple on the hills. In the later days, the hill came to be known as ‘Chamundi Hills’ in honour of the Goddess Chamundi, the chief subject of the ‘Devi Mahathme’.

History

Here the Goddess is identified with Durga, who killed the buffalo demon on Chamundi Hill. Where the temple is established was named after her in honor of her victory and courage. This temple is built in 12th century by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar and renovated in 1827 A.D.
