Architecture

Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple is facing in East direction and the temple has a 2 square sanctums. The entrance Gopura is the highest one and is visible to far places, while the main sanctum gopura is newly constructed and visible only on entering the temple. The Raja Gopura in this image is the actual temple entry constructed by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. This place has carvings of temple, elephant and the statue of Yoga Narasimha on one of the granite pillars. The intricate carvings on the pillars and the overall structure of the temple offer a glimpse into the architectural style of the bygone era and the inner sanctums are supported with plain stone pillars. Yoganarasimha Swamy temple infrastructure boasts of a large pond called Kalyani. The beauty of the steps leading to water and the mantapas built all around are such that it has been captured in many Indian films.

Religious Significance

Sri Vaishnava Saint Ramanujacharya came to Melukote and settled here for 12 years. During this time the temple became a popular Vaishnavaite shrine, deity was worshiped by Sri Ramanujacharya. It is believed that Rama, Krishna and Balarama worshipped here at different timezones. In the Satya Yuga, Prahlada, an eminent devotee of Lord involved in meditation on Lord Narasimha on this hill from which he got the deity of Yoga Narasimha. It is considered that the picture of Yoga Narasimha at Melkote is installed by Prahlada himself. The religious importance of Melkote is explained in various Vedic scriptures such as Ishwara Samhita, Naradiya Purana, Kashi Mahatmya along with Matsya Purana.

History

This temple was built in 12th Century by Hoysala Kings. The Vijayanagar kings and Mysore kings, During the rule of the erstwhile Wodeyar Kings of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar-III had donated a gold crown to the temple deity.
