Architecture
Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple is facing in East direction and the pillars inside the main sanctum resembles the Hoysala structure. The temple tower over the sanctorum or sikhara, is one of the exceptional architectural features of the Venugopala swamy Temple. This refined building style makes it difficult to spot the joints, giving the appearance that the entire sikhara was executed in a single block. The sanctum sanctorum has been retained and refurbished and new polished stones have been added. It houses a big varanda on either sides of the sanctum having many small sanctums where idols of sages and other hindu worshiped gods are placed. The architecture is a mixture of Dravidian and Chalukyan style. A middle hall and a Mukhya mandapa (main hall), the ceiling of the temple is intricately carved. The Hoysala complex is a symmetrical building enclosed by two prakaras, stones with inscriptions written during the construction of the temple are also preserved and displayed. It is written in Hale-old kannada. Lord Krishna idol is Black stone, temple completely granite floored.
History
This temple was built in 12th century by Hoysala Kings. Later during 2003, when there was drought in the region, people noticed some part of the temple, realized that it must be very ancient, showed interest to explore and relocate this temple. Later with the help of Khodays foundation, engineers were allocated many parts of the temple were identified and within 13 days, were moved to other safe side of river banks. The relocation was completed during 2011 since then it has attracted the tourists. Temple was shifted to the nearby Hosa Kannambadi village, philanthropist late Sri Hari Khoday who took up this gigantic task as a Khoday Foundation project. Every single stone is marked and moved to the right place and where necessary new stones have replaced the damaged stones.
