Architecture

Chikka Tirupati has been modelled after the famous Venkateswara temple of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. So,it is called chikka tirupati, chikka means in kannada small. Temple is facing in East direction, constructed in Dravidian style of architecture. The temple has a 5-tiered gopuram very impressive gopuram that leads to the temple is an intricately designed structure with detailed crafting of structures and deities on it. From the entrance tower, the central shrine is located in the axis through the Dwajasthamba (flagstaff) metallic bronze pillar. There is an inscription on the stone wall of the temple about Chola kings.

Religious Significance

Legend date back to Dwapara Yuga, Agni Deva had severe stomach ache after accepting ghee for 100 years continuously. He then prayed Lord Brahma fo the remedy. Brahma suggested him to perform Kandava Dahanam as the forest has natural herbs. Agni stepped back as Indra’s friend Takshak was living in this forest with his family. He then approached Lord Krishna and Arjuna who offered him the protection. With their help, Agni raised himself high and burnt the forest. Indra tried hard to defend the snake Takshak but all his efforts went vain. Takshak who escaped with minor injuries cursed Agni to lose his divinity. Agni then prayed Lord Siva for the help. Lord Siva suggested him to perform penance for Lord Vishnu. Agni relieved from the curse and installed Lord Vishnu and named Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy.
