Architecture

Kolaramma Temple city got the name "Kolahala Pura", a city of turbulence due to the battle between Chalukyas in the North and Cholas to the South. Now Kolahala pura is also called Kolara. The Goddess Durga is village godess of Kolar, so, the name "Kolaramma "came. This temple is facing East, the mahadwara (main entrance) has an imposing appearance and rich carvings of gods, goddesses, birds, animals and apsaras (angels) adorn its rajagopuram. The temple built in the Dravida Vimana architectural style the garbhagriha, adhisthana mouldings and the pilastered wall are covered with numerous inscriptions in tamil characters. The garbhagriha has stone images of Saptamatrikas with Dakshinamurti to the right and Vinayaka to the left. The main image of Chamunda faces south and is worshipped as the chief deity Kolaramma. In the southern cell are the stucco colossi of the Saptamatrikas and the utsavamurti of Kolaramma. Kannada, tamil inscriptions carved depict on temple walls. The treatment of walls with slender pilasters of the main shrine and a large image of Chamunda flanked by Virabhadra and Ganapati are noteworthy. The heroic stone 'Viragal' which is around four and a half feet tall belonging to the Ganga period is covered with relief work of horses, soldiers, elephants, celestial cars and celestial nymphs.

Religious Significance

The royal family of Mysore used to visit the temple and get blessings of the Goddess. Kolar is also associated with stories of Ramayana. It is believed that sage Valmiki lived here and there are also legends associated with Sita and her sons Lava and Kusha of Ramayana epic. Chamundi Devi began her fight with the demon Mahishasura right at the place where this temple stands, then chased him up the Chamundi Hill in Mysuru, where she finally killed him. In commemoration of this event, the idol was installed in Kolar.
