Architecture
Nageswara is one of the name of Lord shiva. The temple complex enshrines Panchalingas i.e., Nageswara, Kaleswara, Nagareswara, Karneswara and Choleswara. The temple is facing in East direction and built in Dravidian style of architecture. The temple has a three vividly painted, towering pyramidal gateways, big gopurams which seemed to be renovated recently. Domes of the twin temple are built in typical Dravidian style. The temple tower features several beautifully carved sculptures of Hindu Gods, Goddesses and kalsas on it. The Vrushabha stambha (Dwaja stambham) granite pillar is found in front of this temple, It is 30 feet tall.
Nageshvara Temple : The Nageshvara temple has a simple square sanctum, a vestibule that connects the sanctum to a "great closed hall" (maha-mantapa or navaragna) which leads to an open hall (agra-mantapa). The ceiling in the closed hall (navaranga) has the characteristic Western Ganga artistic touch, the eight panel sculptures in a square grids (called the ashta-dik-palaka) which includes an image of four handed Uma-Maheshvara (the god Shiva with his consort Parvati). The ceiling of the open hall also has the grid sculptures with an seated image of Shiva and Parvati in the centre. Other sculptures kept in the hall include Mahishasuramardini (a form of the goddess Durga), a unique two handed Ganesh and Kalabhairava (a form of Shiva). The vertical door jamb (sakha) have the typical carvings of creepers with ganas (attendants of the god Shiva from Hindu Mythology) in loops with lotuses (padma) at the terminations. On top of the door jamb, at the centre of the lintel (lalata), is an image of Gajalakshmi (a form of the goddess Lakshmi with elephants on either side). The height of the temple roof seemed to be around 6 feet .
Nageshvarasvami Temple : A square plan for the sanctum, a vestibule, an open hall, a detached hall called Mukha-Mantapa whose ceiling is supported by eight pillars. An image of Nandi is placed in the Mukha mantap making it serve the purpose of a Nandi-mantapa (Nandi hall). The base of the entrance (dvara) is flanked by niches with images of Ganga-Yamuna figures with attendant ladies. This appears to be a Chalukya-Rashtrakuta influence.
Religious Significance
A saint blessed a poor Brahmin with divine water which could turn anything it came in contact into gold. He also warned the person not to reveal this secret to anyone. One night, the poor stayed in a sugar cane store house. By mistake, a little bit of holy water he was carrying with him fell down and turned all the sugar cane into gold. The news reached to the Chola King Kulotunga-II. He suspected that the person had some magical powers to turn the things into gold and the poor did not reveal anything. The king arrested him and ultimately he died in the prison. Thus, the King got the Brahma Hatya dosha. He built a lot of temples including few shrines in this complex to get rid of his sin. He got salvation after he built temples. As per another legend, the original temple was built by Bodayana Rishi and his disciples several years before it was rebuilt by the Ganga Kings.
History
Ravana the villain in Ramayana epic, lost his atma Linga in Gokarna. Before leaving to Sri Lanka, he spent his night in this temple. This temple was built in 9-10th centuries by Western Ganga Dynasty Kings Nitimarga-I (also called Ereganga Neetimarga, 843-870) and Ereyappa Nitimarga-II (also called Ereganga Neetimarga-II, 907-921). Only some portions of the front side and the tower are either innovated or rebuilt in the recent times.
