Sree Poornathrayeesa is the main deity of this temple, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Here deity is facing in East direction in the form of Lord Santhana Gopalakrishna. Lord Vishnu is found here in a sitting posture under the shade of five caps of Anantha.

Architecture

Poornathrayeesa temple has a Gopuram on the western side of the temple is very old, which was built in 11th and 13th centuries A.D. and the temple is rich in wood carvings particularly at the western gopuram. This temple was constructed with Wood in Kerala Style of architecture and has a temple pond. The side walls of sanctum sanctorum where heavily decorated with large brass sheets with statutes of gods and goddess, while the roof is covered with copper sheets, while the entrances of sanctum sanctorum were covered with gold sheets. The first floor of the two-storied gopuram consists of a mandapam (Dias), and eight beautifully carved wooden pillars support the Mandapam.

Dhwaja Stambham :

  • The first Dhwaja Stambham was installed in 1533 A.D. by Kuru Swaroopam, and it fell down in 1654 A.D.
  • The second Dhwaja Stambham was installed next year but it fell down in 1820.
  • The third Dhwaja Stambham which was installed in 1827 was destroyed in the fire of 1920.
  • The present Dhwaja Stambham the fourth one was installed in 1932.

Mandapams & Pillars : Eight beautifully designed wooden pillars which hold the Mandapam. Namaskara Mandapam Chuttambalam with Agra-mandapam. Stone carvings are found on pillars of Namaskara Mandapam, Valiyambalam and Agra Mandapam.

Religious Significance

Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple belonged to the Kochin Royal family and legend reveals that Arjuna the 3rd Pandava son of Mahabharata founded this temple. As per the legend Lord Vishnu offered the idol of Sree Poornathrayeesa to Arjuna when he looked for the help of the Lord to give rebirth to a Brahmin's ten children. Arjuna brought those little ones and the sanctified idol in his chariot and forked over the children to the Brahmin. So to make this event a memorable one a temple was built in the form of chariot.

History

Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple was built 10 decades ago, In the year 1921 it was again reconstructed by the great architect Sri Eachara Warrier and Kochin Royal Family are the contributors of this temple.
